We were thrilled to be involved in Deepa Fernandes' story Getting creative in kindergarten: One teacher's strategy on 89.3KPCC today. Deepa visited one of the most creative and energetic teachers we know - Karen Scannell at Synergy Charter Academy in Los Angeles. Karen uses our materials and curriculum in her classroom, putting her own personality into the program. Her students have so much fun, using movement and creativity, enabling them to fully comprehend the meaning of those tricky Sight Words!

Sight Words with Pictures Build Better Readers

Listening Comprehension and Reading Comprehension come from two different places in the brain. Brain imaging shows that many children can listen, talk, and read words without having all of the words linking to correct imagery in the right side, reading comprehension, part of the brain. The left side of the brain has the ability to memorize information (download and output) without having actually ‘learned’ from the information on the page. When a child learns to read but does not create accurate imagery, mistakes occur. Low test scores, difficulties with following directions, and low reading comprehension are all indications that the left side of the brain is ‘reading the words’ but the right side of the brain is not creating accurate imagery to link with those words. Suzanne and I had a great time visiting some of our schools that are learning to read using Sight Word Smart Cards and Wikki Stix™. We are utterly inspired by our teachers and thought we would share a few of the creative ways our teachers are using their Sight Word Smart Cards to build sight word reading and reading comprehension. Imagine continuing to talk (or, even worse, teach) your child after the ‘connection’ has been lost. There’s NO point, right?
